3rd Place - International Songwriting Competition (Lyrics Category)
Semi-Finalist - Unsigned Only 2023 (Singer/Songwriter - Folk Category)
I wrote this song on New Years day, 2022. I'd just logged off from a live stream by two amazing songwriters I admire so much Gretchen Peters & Mary Gauthier.
I’d only days before finished Mary’s book “Saved By a Song” (a truly great read if you love books) it's about her journey to sobriety through songs. So watching how these women seemed to be their true selves with their music it made me think about how much music (and my guitar) had put me back together, stronger after life experiences that had broken my heart and brought me to my knees.
So I decided to write a gratitude song to my guitar and reflected on how music helps people be their best selves.
In My Hands
(Writer: Jessie Che - Music & Lyrics)
Verse
I haven’t touched you for a week
Unsure for what I’d say
And my hands they’ve felt weak
Almost worn away
Verse
But with you I humm the words
I’m too scared to speak
Let the tones touch my soul,
And feed it what it needs
Chorus
When you are in my hands, I make peace with the past
When you are in my hands, there’s no room for a glass
Verse
Pour my heart in this hollow
Sing my sadness to the strings
Quiet nights I can swallow
With the soothing sounds you bring
Chorus
When you are in my hands, I make peace with the past
When you are in my hands, there’s no room for a glass
Bridge
I always feel better, after time together
I’m a little more me, another piece is healed
Chorus
When you are in my hands, I have a bridge from the past
When you are in my hands, I don’t need another glass
When you are in my hands, I can turn my back
When you are in my hands, I let down my mask, I let down my mask
