Bowerbird
Jessie Che’s debut album, shaped by nature, memory and meaning
Why Bowerbird?
When I first messaged my longtime co-writing friend Mark Drilling in early June 2021, I didn’t know what this project would become only that I had a pile of lyrics and a sense that something needed to take shape. “I need the yin to my songwriting yang,” I wrote. I was gathering songs, trying to make sense of a world that had taken some big u-turns, not knowing yet that they’d form an album (although, if I’m honest, that was my hopeful goal).
As the songs started to come together, I began to see them as a collection, snapshots of love, loss, memory, survival and longing. That’s when the image of the bowerbird arrived. A bird that builds its world from gathered things. A creature that sees beauty in bits and pieces, things seemingly discarded by others and arranges them with care and intention.
Once enough material had taken shape, I sat down with my musical director, mentor and arranger Guy Cundell, who helped me decide which songs belonged on the record. Then, in December 2021, just before Christmas I began tracking the songs at Red Brick Music Recording Studio with another longtime musical friend, Anthony Stewart. Anthony's studio is one of my favourite places to spend a day.
So this album became Bowerbird a collection of stories, moments and objects that shine with meaning.
If you're a little old school (like me) and love to have physical copies of your music, you can buy a (signed) copy of Bowerbird here. If you like to stream your music, you can find the link to album here on your platform of choice.
If you enjoy a lyrical deep dive, please see the booklet I have created for you at the bottom of this page, it includes a full list of the very special people who have been a part of this project.
Thank you so much for coming on this journey with me, lets take to the wind together.
