"My Rain"

Winner - SCALA, Festival of Origial Music - (Lyrics Category)

The concept for My Rain began with the chorus whilst I was doing some songwriting professional development with one of my favorite teachers, the fabulous Keppie Coutts. If you want to learn more about the amazing learning opportunities Keppie and Benny provide, you can check them out here.

In this course, Keppie shared a really helpful list of prompt ideas for choruses, and the one I chose to work with was: “If I am ___, you are ___.” It was the perfect starting point, offering so many creative possibilities.

Where I took the lyrical idea next was to use rain (or the lack of it, as is often the case in Australia) as a metaphor for love. Australia’s dry landscape, especially during droughts, became a symbol of longing. The idea of rain — something vital yet unpredictable — seemed like a fitting metaphor for the hope and uncertainty that comes with love. Ever the optimist, I wrote  they lyrics for ‘My Rain’ in hopeful anticipation. I imagined the lush, green fields that follow the rain and the joy of finding imaginary love. By painting that picture in my mind, I held onto the idea that, just maybe, life will imitate art.

My Rain

(Writers: Jessie Che-Lyrics / Avinna Trzesinski-Music)

Although the sky is full of clouds,
Its gone before, it hits the ground
and this western wind, it burns my skin
On my shoulders, there were memories
Five years of thin rings in the trees
My well was dry, nothing left to cry

But here you are, a welcome change
To wash away the driving pain

If I am the ground, you are my rain
You’re falling, I’m lovin', living again
If I am the ground, you are my rain

When I saw your foot prints in the dust
I realised what lonely was
My heart it prayed, that you’d stay
and you turned me over, made me new
Oh what a little love can do
I’ve waited so long for you, so long for you

And here you are, a welcome change
I always want you this way

We sink beneath the cooling sheets
Into a land we’ve never seen
Everything, is thriving
Swimming, loving, drowning

If I am the ground, you are my rain
I’m falling, I’m loving, living again
If I am the ground, you are my rain
You are my rain….
