Finalist – Top 10 – World Songwriting Awards – Modern Country Song (Winter 2025)
Spaces began with a haunting musical sketch and concept from my longtime co-writing friend, Mark Drilling. There was a stillness in it that spoke volumes and from that foundation, the lyrics found their shape.
Spaces is a song about absence and how it feels to pack up a life once shared. It captures the way memories linger in empty rooms and how everyday things sit quietly in corners, seeming to taunt a grieving heart. For anyone who’s ever had to let go, leave, start over, and become a new version of themselves, I hope this song offers a soft place to land and just enough of a meaning flip in the last verse, to spark hope for a better tomorrow.
Spaces
I hold your shirt, breathe you in
Just to feel you close again
The sadness of the spaces left behind
Now I’m left here to roam
About the floors, a half-filled home
The sadness of the spaces left behind
You drove away
With all that you wanted to take
small little bag and your favourite cap
You won’t be making it back
Years of love, love is now drowning in tears
And I can’t make it stick in my mind
I’m something left behind
Wishing I had seen the signs
Before the lies tore down our lives
The sadness of the spaces… left behind
You drove away
With all that you wanted to take
A small little bag and your favourite cap
You won’t be making it back
Years of love, love is now drowning in tears
And I can’t make it stick in my mind
I’m something left behind
Spaces you left in my heart and my home
Time for a new life its time to grow
I pack up our life and this is the final goodbye
The years are long, long since you’ve been gone
And though you have her you still try me again
But there’s nothing left of back then
Years of love, with not much to show its all gone
And you just can’t make it stick in your mind
You’re something left behind
